TEACHING   &  LESSONS

DRAMA
Students are encouraged to develop their understanding and enjoyment of acting through practical lessons, script work, improvisation and performance.

Each term our Saturday and Sunday students will work towards productions.  By exploring a series of fundamental skills, such as;  movement,  characterisation, ageism, sense memory, emotional memory and voice,  students develop a good grounding in performance technique.
Within lessons, Tutors will look at the different disciplines needed for stage dramas and musical theatre.  They will also examine the differences between stage work and working to camera for TV and film.

Lessons are structured to suit individual age groups and abilities, and every student is given the opportunity to showcase their work throughout the year.   Pre-senior and senior students work on a festival of plays in March/April.  This year’s festival will take place at ‘Theatro Technis’ in Camden.

DANCE
Movement and dance are an important part of a performer’s training.  Lessons focus on a number of dance styles including; modern, jazz, street dance, hip hop, musical theatre and contemporary.  During lessons, students develop performance skills (solo & group work) as well as audition technique.  Students will take part in choreographed routines which are designed to increase observation and retention skills and build ability to work within a structured group.

SINGING
Weekend classes include the teaching of techniques for warm up, breath control, increasing range, clarity and projection.  In addition to working on songs from a variety of musical styles, tutors will teach vocal control and microphone technique.  In association with the drama department, students will also work on emotional delivery and stage presence.  Any students with the desire to develop  personal performance skills will be encouraged to audition for our popular Cabaret  evenings.  These evenings are usually held once a term, and they give students the valuable opportunity to perform to a live audience.

DANCE TROUPE
Centre Stage dance troupe offers additional dance classes to students who are looking to work on more complicated dance routines.  The class takes place on Saturdays (between 1pm  and 2pm).  The group is split into Junior and Senior students.   The Dance Troupe performs  at various events throughout the year.

YOUNG CENTRE STAGERS
Young Centre Stagers meet on a Tuesday evening after school.   Children from the age of  4 to 11 are taught in an imaginative and fun environment.  Lessons are designed to stimulate imagination, increase concentration, develop social interaction and build confidence.   Young Centre Stages will be inspired through dance, drama, singing and creative play.

UPSTAGED THEATRE COMPANY  (Entry By Audition)
Established in 2006, Upstaged is a creative drama group for students age 15 to 22.  Following successful productions in London Fringe theatres and (in 2009 / 2010) the Edinburgh Fringe, Upstaged will continue to offer challenging plays for the serious performer.  Previous productions include;  ‘The Crucible’,  ‘Love of a Nightingale’,  ‘The Penelopiad and, in 2010, the thought provoking play ‘100’.  A Fringe first award winner during its initial run at the Edinburgh Fringe.
In 2011, Upstaged will be working on two productions.    A drama (as yet to be confirmed) and a Musical.  Auditions for the musical, ‘Les Miserable’  (schools addition) will begin at the start of the September term , with the production taking place in the February half term.  The Upstaged drama production will take place in June 2011 (and possibly transfer to the Edinburgh Fringe in August).  Auditions for the drama production will be in the spring of 2011. Date TBC.   Upstaged Theatre Company meets one evening a week during rehearsal periods.  Additional summer rehearsals take place when the production is playing at The Edinburgh Fringe.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
As the name implies, these classes are specifically aimed at students who wish to pursue a professional career in the Entertainments Industry.  The classes take place one evening a week and run in 2 / 3 /4 or 5 week slots.  Tutors cover a number of topics, providing valuable and practical understanding of the realities of working within the entertainment industry.  Whether students aspire to work in theatre, television film or the music industry, either in front of an audience or behind the scenes, they  will be given practical advice to help with career choices.  Tutors will explain the different techniques and disciplines required for stage, TV, Film and Radio.  They will prepare students for castings and auditions, and look at a number of varied career opportunities within the industry.    Young Professional classes will also examine the work of playrights such as Shakespeare and Arthur Miller and look at the pioneering theories of Stanislavski.

To develop students understanding of a career in entertainment,  visiting industry professionals will be invited along to give advice in their specialist fields.
Drama College Preparation Classes

In conjunction with Young Professionals, these classes will be held from time to time to prepare older students for college interviews, auditions and scholarships.   Students will be guided through the application process and given help in the selection and delivery of monologues and drama pieces.
